Round 5 Match 1

Superhero Showdown!
While many, (including BarrieIce) may contend this battle has already been played out in Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns", we must remember that this tournament operates on several levels, not just combat. And on closer inspection, there are lots of differences on which to evaluate these two. Not the least of which is their philosophical differences.
Miller himself has pointed out that these two icons are fundamentally opposite in their outlook. Superman believes that the world is inherently good and therefore needs to be protected from external forces. Batman believes the world is inherently corrupt and therefore needs to be "fixed" through the sheer force of will of individuals like himself. In Miller's words, "these two would not get along".
So, for this reason and many others, a vote must be cast once and for all. Who is cooler in your eyes? What path of heroism do you subscribe to?

Comments:
I think that Superman's the bigger icon but as I've said before, I think that this battle is about more than who's bigger (or else we could have left ourselves out of it and decided based on Google hits, as has happened from time to time). My problem with Superman is the lack of conflict - it's hard to ever see him in any real danger from Earthly foes (hence the need for repeated extra-terrestrial dangers). I think that the most interesting thing they did with the Superman franchise was kill him, and then they just brought him back.

Batman's got a more interesting back story, better villains, (never mind the Joel Schumacher versions), and more interesting storylines.

Batman for me, please.

i base this on movies alone - in general, the batman movies have sucked *ss. but, then Batman Begins arrived with my favorite celeb crush Christian Bale. Suddenly, Batman is dark, dangerous and yummy. Superman has never, ever been that. He is forever nerdy and squeeky clean. I vote for Batman, but only Batman of the Christian Bale kind. :)

I'm trying to be a bit more of an optimist these days so i lean towards superman...it's a tough one though..batman has had some great lines in his storied career...Jeffy makes a good point with the better back story, better villians thing...

I'm going with the Bat

Wow folks! Really? Batman as the stronger icon, eh?

You give me pause for thought.

Here's the thing: Batman can't beat Superman. We're not voting on the villains associated with each character, so that isn't a factor. I don't think making the decision based on movies alone is an informed decision. Superman and his iconic "S" logo are more recognizable and used (and abused) in pop culture. And Superman's approach to helping people is better, too.

Don't get me wrong. I think Batman is very cool. But when it comes down to it, I can't agree he is the bigger icon.

I'll take a dash of George Reeves, a pinch of Christopher Reeve, and dose of Dean Caine with some Tom Welling and Tim Daly on the side for the win, Alex.

And Moxy, let us not forget Brandon Routh - who maybe isn't the best actor to ever fill the blue and red suit, but not hard on the eyes...
Like the dark knight, Supes was orphaned (at a younger age than bats and his entire planet was destroyed AND pieces of that planet, weaken him to the brink of death now) and was left on an alien world, that he later found would often view his special powers with hostility and skepticism.
He did not seek vengeance in the way Batman did, and i could argue is often not as smart as batman, but he is the greatest superpower in one universe and as Al and I have discussed (omg - we are such geeks hon), he wakes up every mornign and decides to remain a good guy, to use his powers for good instead of personal gain or tyranny. He continues to protect mankind, despite their flaws.
So - there is conflict and true heroism in Superman.
The power of Superman as an icon greatly overshadows that of the bat.

Well said, Vicbear. Oh, and I'm sorry for forgetting Brandon. My bad.

Batman... but only by a smidge... and I'm likely swayed by the hotness of Christian Bale

I'm going to side with my kids and take Superman. He's a real good guy and flies. Three for Supes

Superman and Batman are vying for the Super Handyman title.

Superman was a natural - his strength let him lift and place boards with ease. His flight made ladders obsolete. The xray vision was perfect for diagnosing stubborn concerns and problems.

However, Batman is essentially a rich eccerentric aristocrat. He hired someone to do the deed for him. He was eventually caught and Mike Holmes was having none of that shady business.

He was tossed aside like a defeated villian.

PUH-LEASE.

We all know the outcome (thank you, Alan, for stating my case). Bats used krypto gloves to give Supes the beating he had coming LONG before he got "killed".

BATS is INSANE (when he needs to be) and Frankly will play dirtier.

Batman: 45.5 million google pages
Superman: 33 million

The people have spoken.

Because in the past those voting would sometimes poll their relatives and "friends" and get those votes counted I'm sure my legitimate and publicly verifiable findings via Google will make this the ultimate squash (although oddly it hasn't in the past...hmmmm).
