Captain James Tiberius Kirk is my dad. OK. Not my real dad but when the boob tube is a teet you want to nurse at day and night growing up during the Vietnam War (like I was there!) then there can be no better Father Figure, no better RINGMASTER, than THE KIRK. And I know I speak for most boys who grew up in the 60s; they feel the same (or they were just saying that to get me to stop talking).

He's the shizzle-dizzle...although his OTHER characters -- meh. Danny Crane I suppose can be my Grandad or something...just let me take Navigation one more time (and no, I don't want to be un-named unrecognizable red-shirted doomed guy who you know has got only minutes to live).

James T...hands down. When the flip phone first came out...how many times did the Captain Kirk imitation come out. Need I say more...
Captain Kirk... even as a non-trekkie I've been aware of his existence my entire life.
Plus Gollum is creepy. No way I could vote for him.

Gollum is one of literature's most renowned characters and that sways me mightily.
Yet - he's up against Kirk - THE Kirk. Although LOTR is arguably one of the most pervasive books in pop culture, you cannot beat Star Trek when it comes to mythos, marketing, any and all the bits that make up pop culture. So, though i hate that Gollum is going to go out so early in the fray - my vote has to go to Kirk.

I don't know why, but Star Trek really does nothing for me. And Gollum is what saved the movie and the play for me. I have to give him props for that.
And I would hate to see him squashed - really imagine it - what exactly are his insides made of?????
