Round 1 Match 39

Slothful Oaf vs. Beatnik Sailor
Homer: If the measure of a cool icon is the commonality it creates amongst pop culture consumers, then Homer is very cool. I've been to parties where the entire conversation takes the form of Homer-speak quotations.
Gilligan: Cool for his hat, his way with the ladies, and his ability to fight off giant rubber spiders.
Criteria: Gilligan arrives in Springfield and mistakes Homer for the Skipper. Homer sees the potential in having a willing first mate to order around. Discuss.

Comments:
The criteria is flawed. Gilligan would still be stuck on the island.

So Homer arrives on the island and proceeds to eat all the bananas and build a still that produces some very fine and potent coconut hooch. He also promises that he knows a way off the island.

After two weeks, the food shortage is taking its toll on our castaways and the side effects of the constant influx of 150 proof swill are severe - including halucinations and temporary blindness.

Skipper sends his "little buddy" out to find food. In a delirious state, he mistakes Homer for a wild boar, skewers him and roasts him to perfection. Our island dwellers feast.

Once their bellies are full, their heads begin to clear and they realize the mistake that has been made. Skipper growls, "Gilligan" and hits him with his hat. The secret of how to get off the island lost forever in their swelled stomachs.

Although there are no clear winners, at least Gilligan is still alive.

Gillian - cause he looks really neat

Gilligan was kind of funny in that goofy way. Homer is kind of funny in that goofy, poor husband and father, shmuck kind of way.
I have been saying D'oh for years. I have made reference to building a radio out of coconuts and packing so many clothes for a three-hour tour.
But I feel that Gilligan (though he was the title character) did not make the show as memorable as it was. His character seemed secondary to the situation. Homer, however, for me, is the end all be all of Simpson's humour and societal finger-pointing. He is the greater icon in this match and he gets my vote.

I don't think that either of these players would be smarter than a 5th grader. If fact, I am not sure that they could challenge a preschooler when it comes to wit. However the producers of the show decided that Homer was too rude to expose to the children that are featured everyweek, and he didn't make it past the intial interview.

Gillian did get as far as the practice rounds, but unfortunately was not chosen for the "celebrity" game.

Another tough match... I'm forced to base this solely on which one impacted me in my generation... Gilligan was long off my tv set by the time I turned it on. Homer has been a part of my life for more than half of it...

D'oh, Homer has been more iconic for me...

Ahhhh two dufuses (dufusi?).

Coconuts, while no one mentions this, gives you the shits (and I'm not talking lactose intolerance)...so you'd want to get the fuck out of dodge pretty darn quick.

I HATED Gilligan's Island. Mostly because they could never leave the island. This has (and I don't doubt this for a moment) fueled the never-ending puzzles that fans thirst and moan over at the watercooler following Wednesday night's latest "LOST" episode. Yes, they never get off the freaking island but who would want to when things are just so fucked up?!

Although I always had the hots for the Beauty Queen she isn't being voted on.

Homer rules.
