Round 1 Match 27

Child Star vs. Video Avatar!
Punky Brewster: The "Annie" of the 80's. Very prevalent at a time when cute precocious kids' shows were all the rage (see "Webster", "Full House" etc).
Mario: The pipe jumpin', radish throwin', boss beatin', surreal son of a gun! Cool for many reasons, (notwithstanding the whole Bob Hoskins movie thing)
Criteria: Pretty good levels of sentimentality for both icons, and both are from roughly the same era. There is probably a gender division, given the differences in source media. Let the game begin!

Comments:
Punky who? Mario was the shizzle when he came on the scene, and he continues to deliver the goods today. Witness our children's enjoyment of Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, Super Smash, Mario Kart. I could go on.

We may only be gamecubers, but those of you Wii-ners know what I'm talking about, too.

Although I was a fan of Punky, and her later reincarnation on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and never was a gamer, I will have to give my vote to Mario.

If there every was a character who sums up the culture of gaming, it is our blue-suspendered friend.

Einee, Menee, Minee, Mow - Punky was Mowed

Hey, I'm not anonymus, I'm Westbear...

I am also going for Mario on this one. As I've been told, it all about staying power, and Mario sure keeps staying around. Just when we think we are done with him, out comes another video game where he is driving little carts or some other crap.

Although I find him annoying, he is the more ironic icon in this bout!

I feel a SQUASH coming on...

So here we are at another episode of Amazing Race.

It is a tight race (perhaps only in my mind) as Punky and her loveable dog jump from the car to race to Phil's beloved map. Mario is trailing just a few seconds behind. Suddenly a slightly shy and akward eight year from another dimension not really understood hits button 'A'. Yep - turbo boost. Mario is thrust into hyperdrive and whizzes past Punky to secure is spot in Amazing Race(and icon clash) history.

Mario shaped my childhood. Countless hours were spent in front of my original nintendo system trying to make my way to the 9th level of Super Mario Brothers.

He wins without even considering all the spin-offs... Mario Kart and Mario Party are among the highlights for me...

Mario for the win!
