Round 3 Match 3 Winners

Barbapapa defeated the powerful Gary Gnu to move on into the next round.

In a record-setting battle, Keyop emerged victorious. I suspect there was a considerable amount of "recruitment" involved, and for that I applaud those responsible. Actually, I can't believe it took that long for it to happen.

Jeremy is the Squash of the Week as he totally dominated Newton the Centuar.

That Jeremy. He can do most anything. But can he win it all? Time will tell...

The Daedalus/HKP match-up actually ended up being the sleeper match to watch, as the big bad D squeaked by with the slimmest of margins.

Comments:
i fully agree. totally not in a poor sport kind of way, more like in a confused, is that part of the rules kind of way.

If the votes had consisted of a whole bunch of anonymous comments where it seemed likely that it was one voter cloning him/herself, then yes, I may have been tempted to throw those out.
It seemed to me that some supporters had started getting real-life independent people to vote, probably urging them to vote for their favourite. The presence of unique screen names, and some blogger identities with actual blogs seems to confirm this.
I have stated for the record in the occasionally weekly newsletter that folks could and should pass the page on to friends and even mentioned campaigning for a favourite in this manner.
Surprisingly, this battle is not the one for which I feel any regret, but rather the defeat of HKP by only one vote. A case could be (and has been) made about quality of comments vs. quantity of votes in such close contests. I am currently deliberating that issue.
Regardless, on this issue I think a new policy about unsigned anonymous votes will probably be in place, definitely for the final round.

For what it's worth, I have also pondered these issues. To me the balance seems to be between preventing ballot box-stuffing on one side and enabling easy voting by many (without necessarily forcing everyone to start blogger accounts) on the other.

So far, we have erred in favour of the latter (remember, some people aren't even comfortable leaving a made up name in the comments).

One idea that I've thought of (for consideration and potentially further brainstorming only) would be to weight anonymous votes such that only one "anonymous vote" is considered in the decision, decided by a majority of the anonymous posters (thereby making sure that the most that anyone could change by ballot stuffing would be one vote).

Another consideration would to be use a third party commenting service like Haloscan, which allows the webmaster to track IP addresses in addition to comment "names", and ensure that they're not all coming from a common location. To my knowledge, the IP address of the poster cannot be monitored in Blogger comments.

There's no money riding on this, only misguided pride. Although all four of my contenders have been knocked out by the less enlightened, I am not going to let it ruin my day - for I will now focus on knocking out everyone elses picks in a "I'm going to take my ball and go home" kind of way. That's what Phooey would have done. By the way, it is very easy to create multiple identities on this site. Just you wait and see...

It's not as easy as I thought to create multiple users. So I have had to resort to recruitment.

Whenever you see 2 to 5 single username comments logged in a row that seem coordinated, know that the voting is being manipulated by me, the puppetmaster. With an arsenal of over 300 summer staff with controlled access to computers, I am a force to be reckoned with.

A-Bear, it's all in good fun though, so call me if you want me to knock it off. My hope is that other players will do additional recruitment to save their picks.

I've got no beef with more voters; it's what I've been wanting since starting this site.
In fact, I was hoping that some of the "recruits" from last week would stick around and vote this week, thus confirming their existence.
My only misgiving is that my house can't possibly hold all your staff, (and, I believe, moxywoman's colleagues from her new work? If I'm right, welcome aboard!). Perhaps we will have to move the wrap party to the Atlantis Ballroom?

My staff aren't invited to the after party for they are not true icon-o-clashians. In fact, they are voting under duress, which makes it even more fun.

And besides, Atlantis is much too expensive for our tastes. How 'bout Chuck E. Cheese?

Dude, can't you get us in for free?
Although Chuck E. Cheese does have its appeal...

haven't got the new colleagues at work in on things yet...will try soon.
