Calvin: From his daydream adventures, to the haircutting incident, to the subversive snowmen, Calvin is tres cool. Evidence abounds of his pop-culture permanence, mostly in the form of bootleg T-shirts and obscene truck decals.
Astro Boy: Anime's Pinocchio. As with much early anime, few on this side of the world knew just how "big" Astro Boy was, nor were we ever exposed to the unedited versions of his stories.

not that i didn't watch hours of astro boy growing up, but one blast of spaceman spiff's transmogrifier ray gun and astro boy is astro toast. literally.

Astro-Boy gets my vote here... he was my first exposure to anime growing up, and my first exposure to the idea that there were kids on the other side of the world who liked cartoons too! (ok.. small town girl.. it's true) PLUS! I really wanted an astro-puppy.
I still love Calvin with all my heart.. but... no.

What I have an issue with is the "ironicness" of Calvin.

In fact, I agree that he's too cool for this competition - there's nothing ironic about our love for him.
Plus there's the whole urinary incontinence thing. I hate a lot of cars too, but you don't see me losing my control all over them...
Astroboy is brave and gentle and wise!

Hmmm. Astro Boy - just thinking of the theme song makes me want to cringe. Not to mention that ridiculous bit at the end where you had to try to remember the "mistake" from earlier in the show - oh the dish went from sage to forest green - stupid children for not seeing that!
Calvin's snowmen still make me laugh out loud and his pointy hair is just plain old better...

The ironic thing is that Astroboy is more Calvinist than Calvin. The android fated to never grow up nonetheless aspires to contribute to good in the world. Cartoon Calvin absolves himself of any moral agency, citing the doctrine of the elect, and doesn't even try.

Astroboy it is for me! I loved watch it when I was little, and would watch is now if I could, and this tim e around I may even find the "mistakes" in the show!
