Round 1 Match 12: Animal Division
Equine Battle!
Newton: Faithful sidekick to the Mighty Hercules. Sometimes the comic relief, sometimes the plucky hero, sometimes the "damsel in distress", Newton is arguably the most memorable part of the classic cartoon. Cartoon!
Bullwinkle: Noble of heart, this globe-trotting moose (along with his much smarter and resourceful companion Rocky the Squirrel) fought the cold war well, even though his skills in magic left something to be desired.

Picture the clearing...the glade a beautifully watercoloured rendering and there the gentle centaur nibbling at the grass and in comes that FANTASTIC icon calling out with friendship and concern "Newton?!" Or didn't Herc, as he was known to his buddies, have a babe and didn't she call out for "Newton", too? She was a bit dim I seem to recall but she meant well. (Yes, I yearned to wear Herc's ring). How many times have I thought of that show as I ran up the stairs and shouting out for all in the house to hear "OLYMPIAAAAAAAA!" (and wasn't the inspiration for that yell taken from a great Frank Capra movie "Arsenic and Old Lace"? Didn't Uncle Teddy run up the stairs screaming "CHARRRGGE!").
But didn't Newton piss me off? Wasn't it Newton who was getting everyone in trouble??? And yet I wouldn't have seen Herc battle the glowing eye-stalks (that he'd smash together to win the day) or hold the beaks apart of some giant bird and then tame and in later shows ride proudly (man, Herc kicked ass Steve McQueen style). And Newt did save Herc's ring a number of times. Hmmm...maybe that's the tattoo I've been looking for. That unmistakeable "H". Jeez. I'm not sure I remember who Newton is up against now.
Damn. Bullwinkle. Probably doesn't matter. Now if Bullwinkle renounced his US heritage and said proudly (with a beer in hand) "I AM CANADIAN"...well, maybe he'd have a chance. I'd throw my vote in then. Although he was funnier...but he doesn't have the kind of backup Newton has got at his beck and call.

The Mighty Hercules
i hadn't likened Newton to a liger (just about Napoleon's most favourite animal ever), but I'm glad that i get to think of him that way now.
Big Hercules fan - kind of wanted to be Helena so i could be his girl friend.
Not so much with the moose and squirrel.
Still, Bullwinkle seems like a pretty big force in the cartoonosphere, but there's something about that little voice saying, "Hey Herc, hey Herc" that wins him my vote...

As annoying as Newton is, I'm voting for the devil I know (Newt) rather than the one I've never seen (Bull-W).
Besides, I can vote against him in the next round, after having toyed with his confidence and buoyed his esteem. Ironic or cruel, or both?
