Round 1 Match 11: Cute/Funny Division

Clash of the Literary Titans!

Max: The protagonist of Where The Wild Things Are, which stands up even today as a great children's book. Max was mischievous and had monster friends. Pretty formidable foe.

Petit Prince: Everyone who didn't know this character from their youth eventually confronted him in advanced French class.

Comments:
I read the books. The Little Prince was written by a man who lived through two World Wars. When you read the Little Prince you can almost feel the same yearning John Lennon felt for everlasting peace...a child's wish for real and powerful magic to come down to our world and turn our heads away from adulthood.

I will always vote for the Little Prince.

The everlasting peace argument sways me quite a bit, but I have never read Le Petit Prince and didn't like the show...
However, Max, the grand adventurer, friend to monsters, him I know.
Max gets my vote.

I love what Jeff said about Le Petit Prince -- it totally captures it. This book taught me lessons as a kid, and retains its magic for me as an adult. There is no contest for me; like Jeff, I will always vote for the Little Prince.

Le Petit Prince also taught me important lessons about drinking and shame.

With props to Max (who I will admit I have not read), Little Prince gets my vote.

While the influence of the Little Prince is astronomically impressive, Canadian Idol Calan Porter dims the strength of that argument somewhat.

Max can only boast Metallica references, but the childhood sojourn of the imagination while enduring bed-without-supper reminds me of how I entertained myself during time-outs on the porch.

Monsters notwithstanding, a vote to the Max!

When I lived in Quebec, I found out what a true icon this little man is. He is like Clifford, or Amelia Bedilia (my childhood heroes). I went into a store once where a girl screamed when she saw one of the Le Petit Prince books - and I'm serious.

This is one of the toughest choices of the tournament so far for me. I love both books and both characters. Le Petit Prince is definitely my favourite of the two, and the more ironic icon of the two, as well.
