Round 1 Match 8: Animal Division

Elephant Battle!

Babar: The kind and benevolent King of the Elephant lands. Babar, (as a jungle creature adopted by the civilized world, and bringing those ideals back to the jungle) is like the "anti-Tarzan".

Mr. Snuffleupagus: The not-so-imaginary friend to Big Bird, who has since revealed his existence to the rest of the street. Personally, I loved the "Sesame Street goes Hawaian" episode where they searched for Snuffleupagus island.

Comments:
Babar was organized and could even get the other species to fight the Rhinos. Snuffle-uffagus (spelling?) was mostly a figament and as you say was the moment when Sesame Street "jumped the shark" when everyone could see him. He's lame, damnit, lame!

And he can't run...

It is way more fun to say Snuffleupagus than Babar. Plus, the Snuffster has that fantastic slow voice which was always on the verge of a deep whine. And for years he had everyone believing that Big Bird was Cuckoo and could go off without warning. Added that air of danger to the show...

I really like Snufflelupagus. Oh Dear...
and I really find Babar rather boring. He would win the "which icon is Vic most likely to fall asleep to" battle, but he won't win this one!
S to the nuffle!

Snuffy. Who else is big enough to be able to call Big Bird just "Bird"? And those lashes, man. And that sweet temperament. There's no contest here, as far as I'm concerned.

I'd hate to see these two fight at all, such gentle creatures that they are. That said, I think Babar is WAY smarter and would beat Snuffy in a fight. I'd like to think he's smart enough that he'd figure out a way to beat him without hurting him.

And Snuffy's so slow, what with the two actors, one of whom unable to see.

I'm torn about kids seeing Snuffy. I recognize the nostalgic value of having him be Bird's invisible friend, but if there's a good psychological or child development reason to have him visible, I'm not about to stand between a good innovation and my kids.

It's hard not to think of the "Huh?" moment the first time I saw adults interact with Snuffy. Was it a dream? Did they finally find him?

And then I voted for Babar.

as loathe as I am to vote for Babar, having worked with the spoiled child "star" who was his televised voice, he gets my nod over Snuffy. Snuffy's "aw-shucks" temperament wears thin.

Canadian content, quickness and agility of body and mind (for an elephant - certainly more than a Snuffleupagus), and a take-charge attitude win me over.

All hail King Babar.
