Steel Blades vs. Steel Toe
Peter Puck: The mascot and spokesperson for the noble game of Hockey. Make note of the lack of teeth, the menacing brows and the fact that he's already let go of his stick in anticipation of "dropping the gloves". Opponents be warned.
Boot: The mascot and spokesperson for the noble pursuit of reading. Why a dilapidated piece of footwear was presented as a symbol of knowledge and phonics I'll never know, but somehow it worked. Also a bit of a ladies man, as there was romantic tension with Pretty the pink pump, the likes of which wouldn't be seen again until "Moonlighting".

I have to vote for the Boot. Reading vs. hockey? Reading wins every time. I admit that of _these_ images the puck would look cooler on a t-shirt, the Boot is the icon that I recognize.

It would be easy to say that Peter Puck is a cute corporate logo designed to lure people into the big business of professional sport viewership and thereby distract them from political and social matters that are more meaningful to them and their loved ones.
So I will.
Before hatemail arrives, allow me to say in Peter Puck's defense that I consider encouraging children to be active is also a worthwhile goal.

I have to echo Jon A.'s questions, "The boot? THE BOOT????" Not only is Peter an icon of the iconic HNIC show of years past, but he even tried to educate our hockey-knowledge-challenged friends to the south on NBC's Hockey Game of the Week. I would suggest that this would be a challenge from which the roughest, toughest hockey knowledge guru would shy away.
What would Peter say about Foxtrax.? Talk about unnecessary surgery just to satisfy the American hockey audience?
And that smile on his face isn't becuase he's happy to see his opponent, but rather because nothing pisses off your competition more than sarcasm and laughing in their face!!

Where was I? I don't recall either of these mascots? But, on description alone, the boot gets the boot. My vote is for Peter Puck.
